by Paul Nilsen Montenegro have Jelena Vucetic to thank for their first win in Tallinn after a fabulous MVP performance of 43 points and 11 rebounds paved the way for a 95-69 success over Austria. Montenegro managed to lay the foundations for the win courtesy of a blistering 36-13 first quarter. In the battle of the Group A unbeaten teams, Croatia maintained their perfect record after completing their latest success in Group A with a tense 55-52 victory over Slovak Republic. 15 rebounds from Ana-Marija Begic paving the way for the success although Sabina Oroszova was the outstanding player in the game with 17 points and 10 rebounds for the losers. Another sublime display and a stunning 31 points by Romanian star Sonia Ursu helped her team pick up their third win of the competition after they overcome Latvia 74-71. Ursu even managed to grab 11 boards to add to complete a double-double while Latvian guard Sabine Dukate can certainly feel aggrieved at not finishing on the winning team. Latvia were ahead going into the final ten minutes but a poor 21-13 final period meant that her contribution of 25 points was not enough to help secure the win. One crucial factor in Romania coming out on top in this game was the defensive plays of Arina Craciun who not only managed to claim 13 rebounds, but also came up with seven blocks. Still in Group B, Switzerland remain winless after three games having lost their latest game 46-40 at the hands of Estonia. The Swiss team could only score once in the third quarter and that 13-2 run ended their hopes. It was also tough on Dan Bozovic who pulled down an amazing 20 rebounds to go with her 11 points but the had little support. Nele Laurimaa top scored for Estonia with 21 points. Denmark sit proudly at the top of Group C with three wins thanks to a hard fought 63-56 win over Luxembourg with Anna Seilund registering 23 points and 4 assists. She wasn't the only player to make a pivotal contribution with both Mathilde Gilling and Emilie Klint both pulling down 10 rebounds. Bosnia & Herzegovina completed a 78-70 success over Slovenia with a decisive third quarter proving the difference between both teams. Bosnia & Herzegovina also had the MVP and game winner in Nikolina Milic who claimed 28 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. |
